What is Smart Money in Sports Betting?

If you have been involved in sports betting, you might have heard the term ‘smart money’ more than once. It is an important concept for sports bettors and needs to be properly understood. Money invested by a certain category of sports bettors known as sharps is known as smart money. Sharps are professional bettors that have proper knowledge of the game; they do more research, have bigger bankrolls and can make long term profits.

Sportsbooks do not like to lose. They are in operation to make money and therefore, they pursue the smart money. They check out where the money has been put in by the sharps as opposed to the public money. While the public money can lose, the sharps seldom lose. Therefore, they follow the smart money movements and adjust their odds to balance the action initiated by the sharps and their smart money.

Average bettors need to take special care while observing the movements of smart money. They know that it is the smart money that would make the odds in a game move. Therefore, it is important for the sports bettors to sense which side the smart money is and based on this betting tip, they can place their bets.

Sports bettors also need to understand that the smart money does not always win but surely it wins more times than the public money but it loses often as well. Over a long period of time, even the smart money would be on the winning side only 60 times out of 100 chances. Therefore, it only has a slight advantage. Some bettors take this as a cue and take it as a betting prediction putting in their money in favor of the smart money. But this approach really restricts the opportunities of winning for a sports bettor.

If you wish to bet on some really interesting games, then you must have the eye to spot where the smart money is. No website would tell you where the smart money is but you must be able to spot it. However, you should be able to time your bet well so that you are in sync with the smart money and not miss the opportunity.
